Why do I set myself such challenges? I'm currently working on my DVD-showreel thingie, which is involving much crunching of numbers for my 18 month old computer. It's presently burdened with rendering a reasonably or rather, deceptively simple 20 second clip. But due to reflections of semi-transparent objects etc, it's spent all night on it and still has a few hours left to go. I really need an extra 1GB of memory for the old girl.
It seems ridiculous to make such a statement, but I'm one of those few people who actually stretch their machine. New PC's these days come equipped with dual or quad core processors and minimum 2GB RAM... but what are 80% of these machines going to be doing on a day to day basis? eMails, bit of web stuff and maybe a letter...
I have a problem when it comes to buying upgrades.Perhaps I'm just cheap, while I could probably get an extra 1GB for about £25, it's the idea of spending any money on something, which if it does it's job, I will never notice. Things will just get done quicker... and then I'll get more ambitious, cram more stuff into a frame, things will take longer and I'll be grumbling about having to buy a new computer as my machine can only handle a max of 2GB... It's a maddening and unending spiral. Although it probably doesn't help that I'm rendering it in HD when it'll be presented on a standard def DVD.
